Ancient Healing: The Ayurvedic Belly Button Therapy Dancers Should Know About

s dancers and movers, our bodies are our instruments. We stretch, push, and fine-tune them daily — and yet, how often do we turn inward to support that deep, internal balance?

Today, I want to share a simple yet powerful self-care practice rooted in Ayurvedic medicine: Nabhi Chikitsa, or the art of applying oil to the navel.

I came across this during my own healing journey — and if you’re someone who trains hard, performs often, or simply uses your body to its fullest, this might be the grounding practice you didn’t know you needed.

Why the Navel?

In Ayurveda, the navel (or nabhi) is considered a central point for digestive fire and energetic flow. It’s believed to be one of the body’s most vital connection points — and by nourishing it with oil, we can help activate internal healing processes.

Potential Benefits:

  • Detoxification: Castor oil, traditionally used in this practice, is known for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties. While research is still catching up, centuries of tradition back it as a supportive tool.

  • Improved digestion and energy flow

  • Grounding & relaxation – especially beneficial before sleep

How to Try It:

This is simple, practical, and easy to weave into your night routine.

  1. Choose your oil: Organic castor oil (available at most pharmacies) is the go-to.

  2. Lie down before bed and place 5 drops directly in your belly button.

  3. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

  4. Massage gently for 10 minutes in a circular motion around your navel.

  5. Leave the oil on overnight.

  6. Repeat for 3 weeks consistently to allow the effects to build.

It’s a small ritual, but done consistently, it can be a beautiful way to reconnect with your body and give back to the system that supports you daily on the dance floor and off 🌿
