Scared of Change? Here’s Why It Might Be the Best Thing for You

Change. It’s the one thing we know is constant, yet somehow, it’s also the one thing that shakes us to our core. Why? Because change means stepping into the unknown—and the unknown is scary.

In the latest episode of Dance Specific Talks, Coach Sebastian and T-zer got real about the fear of change, the power of adaptation, and the incredible transformations that can happen when you dare to take the leap.

Here’s a glimpse into their conversation—one that will leave you inspired to embrace the shifts in your own life.

Sebastian’sFirst Encounter with Change: A Mirror and a Six-Year-Old

Sebastian’s journey as a dancer didn’t exactly start with a bang. In fact, his earliest memory of dance involved crying in front of a mirror—twice.

As a six-year-old, Sebastian was enrolled in a dance class. On the first day, he arrived late, thrown into a room filled with big mirrors, loud music, and a crowd of unfamiliar faces. It was overwhelming. He burst into tears and ran out.

The second class? Same story.

The experience left such an impact that he avoided mirrors altogether for years afterward. “I wouldn’t even look at myself brushing my teeth,” Sebastian admitted.

But here’s the twist: 12 years later, he gave dance another shot. This time, he didn’t run. He faced the music—literally—and went on to become the dancer, coach, and visionary he is today. His story is proof that change isn’t easy, but it’s often the first step toward something incredible.

T-zer’s Battle with Expectations: From Underdog to Dancehall Finalist

For T-zer, change meant stepping into the unknown—and exceeding her own expectations. She shared a powerful story about competing in the Streetstar Dancehall Battle, an event she initially doubted she’d even survive.

Without a formal crew or years of preparation, T-zer and two friends decided to give it a shot. “We had nothing to lose,” she said, recounting how their passion for the style carried them through round after round.

Before they knew it, they were on the main stage, battling in the final round in front of hip-hop legends and an electric crowd.

“We didn’t have the crew reputation or the years of experience that others had. But we had heart,” she said.

For T-zer, the lesson was clear: sometimes, stepping into the unknown and trying—even when you’re not sure you’re ready—can lead to moments you’ll never forget.

The Fear of Change: Why We Hold Ourselves Back

While Sebastian and T-zer’s stories are different, they share a common thread: the fear of change is universal.

Sebastian reflected on how many dancers resist growth because they’re afraid of what comes with it. He shared the example of dancers who start late in life, believing they’ll never measure up to professionals, even though dance is their only form of exercise and self-expression.

“They say, ‘I’m not really a dancer.’ But what does that even mean?” Sebastian said. “If dance brings you joy, if it moves you, then you are a dancer. The fear of not being enough is the only thing holding you back.”

For T-zer, the fear of change often manifests as hesitation—hesitation to slow down, to embrace vulnerability, or to explore new ways of moving. “Change is uncomfortable,” she said. “But if you don’t step into that discomfort, you’ll never discover what you’re truly capable of.”

Why Change is the Key to Growth

This episode isn’t just about dance; it’s about life. Whether you’re considering a bold career move, starting a new creative project, or simply trying to become a better version of yourself, change is inevitable.

Sebastian summed it up best: “If I don’t swing for the fences now, I know I’ll regret it later.”

The truth is, growth doesn’t happen without change. The question is: will you embrace it, or will you let the fear of the unknown hold you back?
